Political
stability is utmost important in economic development of any nation. Political
instability leads to unpropitious conditions where non-state actors actively
contribute to economic destruction.
Opposition
& Panama Leaks:
In
current scenario of Pakistan the opposition party “Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf” is
hostilely focused on Panama Papers/leaks. They are demanding resignation of
Prime Minister on the basis of allegation of money laundering.
Protest is the beauty of democracy where
people come out and gather at a spot to speak out for their rights. Pakistan
Tehreek-e-Insaf conducted number of protests in different city of Pakistan.
However, lately the chairman of PTI announced to lockdown the capital city
(Islamabad) until Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif resigns and sets
himself accountable for before Supreme Court for allegations of money
laundering.
Nonetheless,
the way PTI opted was unconstitutional since lock-down could lead to an anarchic
condition in state, so the government took strict actions against so protesters
to avoid any irrepressible circumstances. However, later case was taken by, and
still is under consideration of, Supreme Court of Pakistan.
The
opposition must act as watch-dog and should opt the constitutional ways to oppose
the government policies and/or strategies. The same goes for the media, since
media plays a marvelous role in democratic country, being spokesperson of
masses.
Civil-Military
Relations:
Pakistan has
faced as many as 3 successful military coups in history, where the national and
provincial assemblies were dissolved by Chief Martial Law administrators; in
1958 by General Ayyub Khan when Feroze Khan Noon was PM, in 1977 by General
Zia-ul-Haq when Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was PM and in 1999 by Genera Perviz Musharraf
when Prime Minister was Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.
However
current government of PML-N was successful in developing friendly and
cooperative relations with military which resulted in implementation of
National Action Plan (NAP) and Military Operations like Zarb-e-Azab &
Karachi Operation to curb the terrorism in the state. However this relation has
been jeopardized by Down Leaks Scandal.
Down
Leaks:
A
highly confidential meeting between government officials and military
executives was conducted on 3rd Oct, 2016 and the results/minutes of
the meeting were undisclosed for the national interest. Howsoever, Cyril
Almeida (journalist of Dawn News) leaked in his article on 7th Oct,
the insights of meeting by stating that “Civil
government tells Military to act against militants
or face international isolation”. The DG ISPR Asim Saleem Bajwa and PM
office rejected the leaked news and claimed it’s a planted story aimed to damage
the national integration and global image of Pakistan. They further added that
it’s a breach of National Security and investigations would immediately be
started.
This
news couldn’t bring any uneven situation between civilians and military relation,
and two of them are amicably probing the case to penalize the master mind
behind this security breach. Undoubtedly the military is least interested in
taking over the state by Martial Law, rather it’s promoting the democracy and
cooperative strategies for economic development.
Factors
cause Political Instability:
(1) Corruption:
Political stability is directly linked
with the economic stability. Corruption is the core of economic disaster. Peace
and prosperity keeps masses calm and in order, however instable economy
aggravates unrest in society. Corruption includes but not limited to money
laundering, tax evasion and bribery etc.
(2) Provincialism & Sectarianism:
This is another root cause of political
instability in Pakistan where people have been divided according to sects and
provinces, and hatred has been spread among them. This division diminishes the
spirit of nationalism and escalates the provincialism/sectarianism where people
go for their personal/provincial interests rather than for national interests.
Reforms:
(i)
Control corruption and increase
transparency in government policies.
(ii)
Focus on Economic Development
Programs like CPEC.
(iii)
Media should initiate awareness
campaigns to curb Provincialism and Sectarianism and to promote
nationalism.
(iv)
Judiciary must be independent from
political influence.
(v)
Opposition should play a role of
watch-dog.
