Globalization, Technology and Media

Globalization is a vast topic to be discussed on, since it increases the connectivity of individuals, organizations, societies, nation states and cultures at global level. Globalization covers all these areas but primary it has caused tremendous change in the technology and the way media works.

Globalization in term of Technology and Media is caused in reduction in the distance between individuals, governments, societies and organizations in terms of both the time and space. This so reduction in time and space is because of the technological development of Internet and other form of media, and collectively these are known as “Information Communication Technologies (ICTs)”. Such technological development doesn’t only result in dramatically changed mass-media operations but it also allowed the rapid information, knowledge and capital transformation worldwide.

The media and technology are growing all the way together. The technological development helps media to grow globally. The Internet, Social Media, Cable Network, Satellites and other technological advancements made it possible to share the information globally within seconds at cheaper cost.

The media and technology have grown tremendously in last decade and it made very easy and instant for the people to communicate with each other with the help of internet, social media, chat programs and video calling applications. Globalization also affected the way of transportation; industrial revolution when merged with globalization it developed faster, safer, cheaper and environment-friendly vehicles for transportation. Such developments in transportation facilitated people to travel across the world with ease.

Advantages of Globalized Media and Technology:

·     Globalization has turned the Media globalized which provides consumers with vast verity and media-choices which were never available before. The consumers have now access to global information, culture and societies of their choice.

·     As McLuhan said the world has become Global Village, people are now more close to each other than every before regardless of their geographical position, they can instantly communicate and share information with one another.

·    The Globalized Media and Technological advancements have permitted a reduction in the cost of communication. Such communication was noticeably expensive before technological development.

Disadvantages of Globalized Media and Technology:

·   Cultural invasion is the phenomenon of Globalization which has been argued by the number of philosophers. The globalization of media and technology led to westernization of cultures. The best example can be seen in the third world countries where the western culture has been forced by Mass Media and damaging the respective culture of such countries.

·       Privacy and vulnerability is another disadvantage of technology and media advancement. We have become so dependent on technology that we use it for almost each and every task of our routine life. We use devices, gadgets and other equipments which hold our personal and financial information. Such devices can be stolen and could result in privacy and financial theft.

·    Another major disadvantage of the Globalized media and technology is the easy access of inappropriate content. The capable television network and internet often shows the content which is inappropriate to certain age group e.g. pornography, drug/Alcohol consumption, violence and criminal activities.

·   Global Inequality is also referred as cause of Globalization. Some argue that the countries which haven’t access to media and technology have become isolated and remained undeveloped.

Conclusion:
The Globalization has its pro and cons but somehow the pros are outweighed. Nonetheless the globalization has become irresistible and inevitable; the countries have to follow the trend lest they would be isolated. However here the responsibility of developed countries comes; they must entertain and facilitate the isolated countries so that they could enjoy the benefits of globalization too.
