Amr Bil Maroof Wa Nahi Anil Munkar

Brief Explanation of The Term "Amr Bil Maroof Wa Nahi Anil Munkar" And Its Application In Modern Age.

Introduction:

The Concept of Amr Bil Maroof Wa Nahi Anil Munkar is the essence of Deen as the Scheme of Allah Almighty regarding Prophet-hood is entirely based on this concept. Every Prophet ever came to the earth, came with the idea of propagating "good deeds" and forbidding "the evil ones". The same idea is articulated in Quran and postulated by Holy Prophet (PBUM) at length. The basic premise of this concept is to advise "good" and forbid "evil" whatever and however has been happening in the society.

        In Holy Quran God says:

You are the best community raised up for mankind, for you enjoin right conduct and forbid evil and you believe in Allah. - (Al Imran - 110)

In the verse above, God praises the followers of Muhammad (PBUH) for they do "Amr Bil Maroof" (enjoin the right conduct) and "Nahi Anil Munkar" (forbid evil). This verse sheds light on the significance of the concept and makes it obligatory upon Muslims.

Meaning and Connotation:

    i) Amr Bil Maroof:

In Arabic "Amr" means "to advise or to give order" to someone and "Maroof" means an act or conduct which is generally recognized as "Good" and "closer to human nature".

    ii) Nahi Anil Munkar:

In Arabic "Nahi" refers to "Stop" or "Forbid" someone from doing something. "Munkar" means something which is generally recognized as "against human nature" and/or "detested by society at large".
In Islamic connotation, the concept of Amr Bil Maroof wa Nahi Anil Munkar deals with the idea of propagation of Good conduct and forbidding the evil happenings in society.

Philosophical Context of the Concept:

Primarily it is the job of a Prophet of God to preach the good conduct as ordained by God, and forbid the evil in pursuance of the commandments of Allah Almighty. However, as the Muhammad (PBUH) is the last messenger Allah and none other shall ever come to the mankind for guidance; God has made it obligatory on the Muslim Ummah to watch for evils in society and condemn them then and there, and advise people regarding the good conduct which is ordained by Allah and Holy Prophet (PBUH).
        In Quran God says:
And from among you there should be a group who invites good and enjoin what is right and forbids the wrong, and they only shall be successful. - (Al Imran - 103)

In the verse stated above, God is putting emphasize on the significance of the concept by giving success-tiding to those who actually act upon this idea of inviting others for good and forbidding the wrong for betterment and prosperity of society.

Practical Implementation of this Concept:

This concept is of very sensitive nature, and if not implemented in right way, may cause more damage than betterment in the society. For this, the Prophet (PBUH) has defined the "Span of Control" at different levels for the smooth implementation of this idea. For instance, the leader of the family is father, his span of control is his family only; leader of an organization is the CEO so his span of control is his staff only; the leader of state is Caliph/President/Prime Minister and his span of control is his state only.
Here the thing to understand is the authority a person has over others. every organization, be it a family, institute or otherwise, should only be controlled by the respective leader. on the other hand, the leader of the state has the authority over entire nation, hence he can implement the concept by the dint of legislation to enjoin the right and prohibit the wrong in country.

Steps/Stages of General Application of This Idea:

    i) Expressive Action:

The very first step in applying the idea of "Amr Bil Maroof wa Nahi Anil Munkar" in real life is to condemn or promote the bad or good act respectively by expressive actions. This could be a positive nod, a thumbs up, salute or a small clap to promote a good act or vice verse. In every society such expressive actions refer to the social sanctions that carry reinforcement value.

    ii) Use of Words:

Second step in this process should be the use of words. In case, if someone has not been abstaining from evil doing by the use of expressive actions, then one should use polite words to forbid the wrong doer. Such words could be anything but harsh/strong/insensitive.

    iii) Use of Physical Force:

However, use of physical force is the last resort to control the evil activities happening around in the society by anyone. There are instances when use of force become inevitable for the greater good.

"Why Do you speak of a thing, which you yourself do it not" (Al Quran)
So, this duty of inviting others to the righteousness compels one to be righteous oneself at the first place.
  • Last but not the least precondition of acting upon the concept of Amr Bil Maroof wa Nahi Anil Munkar is to have polite and loving manner of enjoining the good and forbidding the evil.

Amr Bil Maroof wa Nahi Anil Munkar is a moral and safety-net for human society in general and Muslim Community in particular. It does not allow the Muslim Community to abandon its members on the path of immorality and self-destruction, nor does it allow Muslim Ummah to be indifferent to the moral and ethical dilemma faced by the humanity at large.
"There should be among you a group who should call towards goodness, bid to the good and forbid from the evil, they are the successful people." (Al Imran - 104)

"The believing men and believing women are helpers of each other: they bid the good, forbid the evil, establish the prayers, pay the zakat, and they obey Allah and His Messenger..." (Al Tawbah - 71)
Imam Ali Ibne Abi Talib (AS) said:

Verily the people before you perished because when they committed sin, the Rabbis and Priests did not forbid them from it... Therefore bid towards the good and forbid the evil...

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

My followers will remain in good condition as long as they bid (each other) towards good, forbid (each other) from the evil, and co-operate with each other in good (deed). If they do not do this then blessings will be lifted from them and some (evil ones) will be imposed upon them (as ruler). In that state they will have no helper, neither on the earth nor in the heavens.

Conclusion:

In this modern and west-influenced age, the implementation of Amr Bil Maroof Wa Nahi Anil Munkar has become dying need of the hour. Muslim Ummah cannot be left at the mercy of such societal evils. Its application must be ensured at all levels by the concerned authorities accordingly. However, the one who is bidding towards good and forbidding from the evil must be very polite with his invitiation so that the social order may not be disturbed. Its universal applicability and fruitious outcomes make it the panacea of all social evils.

How to Prepare for CSS in 1 Year

Assalamualaikum! [ It is often asked that how to prepare for CSS, so I thought to put it down in my blog for you guys, according to the best of my knowledge and experience ] Subjects Selection: The process starts with subject selection.  Choosing optional subjects is utmost important in CSS. The success is primarily based on what subjects you choose. Going for wrong subjects could produce drastic results. So let me know: Have you chosen the subjects? Have you consulted your seniors and/or CSPs before choosing these subjects? If the answer is “ NO ”, then you’re doing it wrong, STOP right away! I won’t recommend you to take opinion from Academies/institutes that prepare students for CSS. (It sounds weird! Right?) The reason is, they would always recommend you the subjects they are proficient with and/or they’ve faculty for. It would be folly to going for such recommendations regardless of your own interests and/or academic background. The reason I recommend consultation with Sen...

The functional approach to mass media: four social functions of the media

Functions of Mass Communication The 1940s and 1950s saw the beginnings of increased research into the functions of mass communications. Post the Second World War, there was widespread interest in trying to understand the impact of mass media messages on society. Functionalism The focus on understanding the effects of mass communications, especially its social consequences and its impact on maintenance of social order gave rise to a theoretical framework called functionalism. Functionalism focuses on explaining slow, evolutionary change and not sudden changes. The limited capacity of functionalism to be used only in policy research, evaluation and planning has been criticized by many theorists. The focus of functionalism is on how mass communication serves society and fails to account for how humans interact with mass communication and construct meanings from messages. The focus on maintaining the existing social order and not allowing for any meaningful change has also b...

Weather Variations | Seasons | Climate Change

The current condition and the state of the atmosphere at given time is called Weather. The axes of the earth are imaginary lines on which the earth rotates. It links up the two poles, South & North Pole. Both the axes and the two poles are tilted at the degree of 23.5 0 during a revolution. The tilting of the axes result in direct sun light falling on different places during different seasons. This causes variations in the durations of days, nights and seasons. Relationship between the location of the overhead sun and the seasons: similarly the revolution of the earth and the titling of the axes result in different angle of the sun during different periods. When the sun is directly overhead we call this overhead Sun. At this time the earth’s surface and midday sun forms a 90 0 angel. Different locations of the overhead sun results in variations in the amount of solar radiation received in different areas under different periods. Spring Equinox – 21 or 22 March: ...

Solar and Lunar Eclipse

The word eclipse means an obscuring of the light from one celestial body. The word Solar is driven from the Latin word “Sol” means Sun , and Lunar is driven from Latin word “ Luna” means Moon . So in Solar eclipse the Sun gets darker, and in Lunar eclipse the moon gets darker. Solar Eclipse:             This happens when the moon’s shades crosses the earth’s surface . In this situation the moon while orbiting around the earth comes in between the earth and Sun. So this obscures the light from sun and makes a shadow on the earth and people couldn’t see the sun completely rather they see a darker spot. The Darker part of the shadow in eclipse is known as Umbra and the lighter part of the shadow is said to be Penumbra . The position of the objects/bodies in this case is as respectively as Sun, Moon and Earth. We call it Solar Eclipse. Lunar Eclipse:          ...

Imbalance in the flow of information between North and South

I n his book Media the Second God , Tony Schwartz, a television advertising specialist, states, “ Godlike, the media can change the course of a war, bring down a president or a king, elevate the lowly and humiliate the proud, by directing the attention of millions on the same event and in the same manner .” Media imperialism is at the moment of primary importance to all the states of the developing world. It is imperative that its various aspects are studied in detail. Some sixty years ago, about the same time as Pakistan got its independence, George Orwell wrote his famous book  Nineteen Eighty-Four.  That classic novel with miraculous prescience depicted with a fair amount of accuracy, the events that were to unfold in the present era. In fact the thought control capacity of the powers that has gone much beyond the Orwellian fancies and fantasies and we have been so conditioned by it that we take it for granted and believe in his slogan “ ignorance is strength ”. ...

Globalization, Technology and Media

Globalization is a vast topic to be discussed on, since it increases the connectivity of individuals, organizations, societies, nation states and cultures at global level. Plate Tectonics Theory

This theory was proposed by W. J. Morgan. This theory states that the Earth’s outer mechanical layer, the lithosphere , is divided into large and small sized plates that are constantly moving, and such plates are called Tectonic Plates . These massive lithosphere plates are all moving into different ways and how they interact with one another can have a huge impact on the earth, where these tectonic plates meet are called The Boundaries. 3 Types of Plate Tectonic Boundaries:           (i)                 Convergent Boundaries occur when two plates are moving towards one another. When two plates collide couple of thing can happen, one of the plate will dive under the other plate. It usually the heavier and denser crest dives under the lighter crest. This creates what we call a Subduction Zone . The deeper ...

Media as a social system: The balance between interrelation and interdependence

Media system dependency theory Media system dependency theory   ( MSD ), or simply   media dependency, was developed by Sandra Ball-Rokeach and   Melvin Defleur   in 1976.   The theory is grounded in classical sociological literature positing that media and their audiences should be studied in the context of larger social systems.   MSD ties together the interrelations of broad social systems,   mass media , and the individual into a comprehensive explanation of media effects. At its core, the basic dependency hypothesis states that the more a person depends on media to meet needs, the more important media will be in a person's life, and therefore the more effects media will have on a person . The relationships between components Dependency on media emerges from three relationships. 1.      The relationship between the society and the media:  Within this relationship, media access and availability are regarde...
