THE CONCEPT OF TOHEED (ONENESS OF ALLAH) IN ISLAM | ITS SIGNIFICANCE & IMPACTS ON HUMAN LIFE.

Briefly explain the concept of Toheed (Oneness of Allah) in Islam |
Significance of Toheed in the Light of Quran and Sunnah |
Impacts of Toheed on Human Life.

Introduction:

Toheed is an Islamic term that refers to the belief in One God, and having strong faith that there is no deity but Allah who created heavens, earth and everything that comes within it. The significance of this belief is so stern that Allah has enunciated it in Quran numerous times that He shall forgive every single sin but He shall never forgive “Shirq” i.e. partnering someone with God either in His being, characteristics or attributes. Almost every religion has its distinct belief system in God, some believe in million gods, some believe in a few and Muslims, on the other hand, believe in only One God being the deity and worthy of worship. In Quran Allah Almighty says:-

Say, He is Allah (who is) One, Allah, the Eternal refuge, He neither begets nor is He begotten, nor is there any equivalent to Him” – (Al Ikhlaas)

Before discussing the concept of Toheed in Islam at length, let’s just explore how people of other faiths and/or religions believe in God. For better understand, religions have been divided in two major categories i.e. Semitic and Non-Semitic Religions.

Existence of God in Non-Semitic Religions:

Non Semitic Religions are also known as Non-Abrahamic Religion, means the bloodline of Prophets and/or leaders of such religions does not link back to Prophet Abraham (PBUH) (Hazrat Ibraheem).

i)                Zoroastrianism: Zoroastriansism is one of the oldest religions in the world regionally based in Iran. Zoroastrians follow the teaching of Zoroaster – their prophet – and believe in 2 gods. “Yazdan” the god of goodness and “Aharman” the god of Evil.

ii)      The Greeks: The Greeks also believe in numerous gods and goddesses, mostly claimed to be 12 in number that share different powers and authorities attached to their titles, “Zeus” being the most powerful one.

iii)     Hinduism: Hinduism being the dominant religion in India and Nepal is practiced by More than a billion people around the world. Hindus believe in millions of gods. Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma are the most significant and powerful of their gods.

iv)         Buddhism:  At the early stage of Buddhism, the Buddhists believed in one Gods, followed the teachings of Buddha. However, later with the passage of time this concept faded away.

Existence of God in Semitic Religion:

Semitic Religions are commonly known as Abrahamic Religions, means the bloodline of Prophets of such religions link back to Prophet Abraham (PBUH) (Hazrat Ibraheem).

i)               Judaism: Being one of the oldest forms of Abrahamic religions, Judaism at first place believed in One God as taught by Prophet Moses (Hazrat Musa) (PBUH). However, later they transgressed and started believing Prophet Uzair as the son of God. Hence they now believe in Duality of deity.

ii)               Christianity: Followed by the teaching of Prophet Isa (the Jesus)  (PBUH) the Christians believed in one God at very early stage however, immediate later they started to believe in Trinity i.e. God, Son (Jesus) and Holy Ghost.

Therefore, Allah Almighty says in Quran:-

And the Jews says, “Uzair is the son of Allah and the Christians say “Masiah (Jesus) is the son of Allah”. (Al Toba-30)

Islamic Concept of Toheed:

On the contrary, Islam propagate the belief of only One God being worthy of worship, being alone in His Characteristics, being alone in His Attributes and being  the lone Sustainer of everything on the earth, heavens and beyond.

Allah is the One in Being:

Allah is peculiar in being; there is no one like Allah. In Quran Allah says:-

“Say, He is Allah, (Who is) one, Allah, the eternal refuge. He neither begets, nor is He begotten, nor is there any equivalent to Him.” (Al Ikhlaas)

Oneness of Allah in Characteristics:

There is no one like Allah in characteristics. None can ever share the characteristics of Allah Almighty. He has the authority on everything and has common on everyone. In Quran Allah Says:-

“Allah, there is no deity except Allah, the ever living, the sustainer of (all) existence, neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep, to him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. Who can intercede with Him without His permission. He knows what is before (present) them and what will be after them, and they cannot encompass anything of His knowledge except for what He will. His Kursi extends from over the heavens and the earth. And their preservation tires Him not, and He is the highest and the Greatest” (Al Baqara-255)

Allah Being Alone Worthy of Worship:

Allah is alone worthy of worship and none other than Him should ever be bowed down. This is what Muslims’ first Qalima tells which is postulated in Quran at two different places and reads as “There is no deity, but Allah”. At another place, Allah says:-

Say, (O Muhammad (PBUH), I have been commanded to worship Allah (being) sincere to him in religion”. (Al Zumar – 11)

Allah is the One being Sustainer of All Existence:

Allah is the alone sustainer of all the existence and there is no other being who can take over this authority from Allah. In Quran Allah says:-

“All the praise is (due) to Allah, the sustainer/Lord of all the worlds” – (Fateha – 01)

Impacts of Toheed on Human Life:

Develops Taqwa (God Fearing):-

The staunch believe in Toheed develops Taqwa in human and He realizes that Allah has all the authority over him and he shall return to Allah one day. In Quran Allah says:-

“And we have certainly sent Noah to his people, and he said, “O my people, worship God; you have no deity other than him, then will you not fear him?” (Al Mominoon – 23)

Develops Sense of Contentment / Removes Despair:

Strong believe in Toheed and oneness of God develops in man the sense of contentment and removes all the contemporary disappointments and despairs. In Quran Allah Says:-

“And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no removal of it except by Allah, and if He touches you with Good, He is over all things Competent.” (AlAnaam – 17)

Offers Freedom From Human Slavery:

A believer of Toheer only submits to God and abstains from Human slavery that emancipates him and offers him eternal freedom. In Quran God says:-

O mankind, you are those in need of Allah, while Allah is free of needs, the praiseworthy.” (Al Fatir – 15)

Develops a Sense of Justice:

Having believed in Toheed develops the sense of justice in human. One believes that if he shall be unjust, then God shall be unjust with him too. In Quran Allah says:-

Indeed, Allah does not do injustice, even as much as an atom’s weight; while if there is a good deed He multiplies it and gives from Himself a great reward.” (Al Nisa – 40)

Develops Optimism in Humans:

Allah has designed human in a way that they are prone to make mistakes and God offer them the opportunity to repent and forgives those who return to their God with remorse. This develops the sense of optimism and hope in humans that their God is still with them. In Quran Allah says:-

Say, O my servants, who have transgressed against themselves (by sin), do not despair of the Mercy of Allah. Indeed Allah forgives all Sins, Indeed, Allah is the most forgiving and merciful.” (Al Zumar -53)

Develops Sense of Accountability:

Having faith in Toheed develops in Humans a sense of accountability. They believe that God has created them and sent them to the earth and after death one day He shall raise them again and shall inquire them about the deeds they’ve done on earth. In Quran Allah says:

So that day their excuses will not benefit those who wronged, nor will they be asked to appease (Allah).” (Al Rome – 57)

Conclusion:

In a nutshell, Toheed in Islam is the concept of believing in One God with all His characteristics, attributes and worthiness of being worshiped. Most of the other religions as well believed in One God at their early stages. However, the concept had been adulterated with the passage of time. Muslims, on the other hand, have been wielding this auspicious belief for centuries and the same has been reciprocating its benefits upon them.

How to Prepare for CSS in 1 Year

Assalamualaikum! [ It is often asked that how to prepare for CSS, so I thought to put it down in my blog for you guys, according to the best of my knowledge and experience ] Subjects Selection: The process starts with subject selection.  Choosing optional subjects is utmost important in CSS. The success is primarily based on what subjects you choose. Going for wrong subjects could produce drastic results. So let me know: Have you chosen the subjects? Have you consulted your seniors and/or CSPs before choosing these subjects? If the answer is “ NO ”, then you’re doing it wrong, STOP right away! I won’t recommend you to take opinion from Academies/institutes that prepare students for CSS. (It sounds weird! Right?) The reason is, they would always recommend you the subjects they are proficient with and/or they’ve faculty for. It would be folly to going for such recommendations regardless of your own interests and/or academic background. The reason I recommend consultation with Sen...

The functional approach to mass media: four social functions of the media

Functions of Mass Communication The 1940s and 1950s saw the beginnings of increased research into the functions of mass communications. Post the Second World War, there was widespread interest in trying to understand the impact of mass media messages on society. Functionalism The focus on understanding the effects of mass communications, especially its social consequences and its impact on maintenance of social order gave rise to a theoretical framework called functionalism. Functionalism focuses on explaining slow, evolutionary change and not sudden changes. The limited capacity of functionalism to be used only in policy research, evaluation and planning has been criticized by many theorists. The focus of functionalism is on how mass communication serves society and fails to account for how humans interact with mass communication and construct meanings from messages. The focus on maintaining the existing social order and not allowing for any meaningful change has also b...

Weather Variations | Seasons | Climate Change

The current condition and the state of the atmosphere at given time is called Weather. The axes of the earth are imaginary lines on which the earth rotates. It links up the two poles, South & North Pole. Both the axes and the two poles are tilted at the degree of 23.5 0 during a revolution. The tilting of the axes result in direct sun light falling on different places during different seasons. This causes variations in the durations of days, nights and seasons. Relationship between the location of the overhead sun and the seasons: similarly the revolution of the earth and the titling of the axes result in different angle of the sun during different periods. When the sun is directly overhead we call this overhead Sun. At this time the earth’s surface and midday sun forms a 90 0 angel. Different locations of the overhead sun results in variations in the amount of solar radiation received in different areas under different periods. Spring Equinox – 21 or 22 March: ...

Solar and Lunar Eclipse

The word eclipse means an obscuring of the light from one celestial body. The word Solar is driven from the Latin word “Sol” means Sun , and Lunar is driven from Latin word “ Luna” means Moon . So in Solar eclipse the Sun gets darker, and in Lunar eclipse the moon gets darker. Solar Eclipse:             This happens when the moon’s shades crosses the earth’s surface . In this situation the moon while orbiting around the earth comes in between the earth and Sun. So this obscures the light from sun and makes a shadow on the earth and people couldn’t see the sun completely rather they see a darker spot. The Darker part of the shadow in eclipse is known as Umbra and the lighter part of the shadow is said to be Penumbra . The position of the objects/bodies in this case is as respectively as Sun, Moon and Earth. We call it Solar Eclipse. Lunar Eclipse:          ...

Imbalance in the flow of information between North and South

I n his book Media the Second God , Tony Schwartz, a television advertising specialist, states, “ Godlike, the media can change the course of a war, bring down a president or a king, elevate the lowly and humiliate the proud, by directing the attention of millions on the same event and in the same manner .” Media imperialism is at the moment of primary importance to all the states of the developing world. It is imperative that its various aspects are studied in detail. Some sixty years ago, about the same time as Pakistan got its independence, George Orwell wrote his famous book  Nineteen Eighty-Four.  That classic novel with miraculous prescience depicted with a fair amount of accuracy, the events that were to unfold in the present era. In fact the thought control capacity of the powers that has gone much beyond the Orwellian fancies and fantasies and we have been so conditioned by it that we take it for granted and believe in his slogan “ ignorance is strength ”. ...

Globalization, Technology and Media

Globalization is a vast topic to be discussed on, since it increases the connectivity of individuals, organizations, societies, nation states and cultures at global level. Globalization covers all these areas but primary it has caused tremendous change in the technology and the way media works.             Globalization in term of Technology and Media is caused in reduction in the distance between individuals, governments, societies and organizations in terms of both the time and space. This so reduction in time and space is because of the technological development of Internet and other form of media, and collectively these are known as “ Information Communication Technologies (ICTs)” . Such technological development doesn’t only result in dramatically changed mass-media operations but it also allowed the rapid information, knowledge and capital transformation worldwide.    The media and technology are gro...

It also known as “The MacBride Report” The report of the MacBride Commission The report considers the complaints of the NAM nations about the defect in the system of international news transfer.  It also tried to understand the intricacies of apprehension of the west, example: the west had alleged that declaration (of the weste...

Plate Tectonics Theory

This theory was proposed by W. J. Morgan. This theory states that the Earth’s outer mechanical layer, the lithosphere , is divided into large and small sized plates that are constantly moving, and such plates are called Tectonic Plates . These massive lithosphere plates are all moving into different ways and how they interact with one another can have a huge impact on the earth, where these tectonic plates meet are called The Boundaries. 3 Types of Plate Tectonic Boundaries:           (i)                 Convergent Boundaries occur when two plates are moving towards one another. When two plates collide couple of thing can happen, one of the plate will dive under the other plate. It usually the heavier and denser crest dives under the lighter crest. This creates what we call a Subduction Zone . The deeper ...

Media as a social system: The balance between interrelation and interdependence

Media system dependency theory Media system dependency theory   ( MSD ), or simply   media dependency, was developed by Sandra Ball-Rokeach and   Melvin Defleur   in 1976.   The theory is grounded in classical sociological literature positing that media and their audiences should be studied in the context of larger social systems.   MSD ties together the interrelations of broad social systems,   mass media , and the individual into a comprehensive explanation of media effects. At its core, the basic dependency hypothesis states that the more a person depends on media to meet needs, the more important media will be in a person's life, and therefore the more effects media will have on a person . The relationships between components Dependency on media emerges from three relationships. 1.      The relationship between the society and the media:  Within this relationship, media access and availability are regarde...
